Important Traffic Rules and Vietnam Driving Fines 2025

Important Traffic Rules and Vietnam Driving Fines 2025

If you’re a foreigner planning to rent a car and drive in Vietnam, there are a few important traffic rules you need to know. From my experience, most self-driving visitors tend to have extensive driving experience. But even then, I often have to remind them, “Don’t exceed the speed limit,” — and their response is usually something like, “Don’t worry about that.”

However, after the trip, I often find violations through my vehicle tracking system. One of the most common issues is speeding, especially in urban areas. That’s why I wrote this article: to help you avoid fines, stay safe, and enjoy your time in Vietnam without trouble.

⚠️ Important update on Vietnam Driving Fines 2025:
Starting January 1, 2025, the Vietnamese government will increase traffic fines for several violations. So breaking the rules can now cost you much more than before.

1. Running a Red Light

If you go through a red light, you could receive a fine of 18,000,000 – 20,000,000 VND (~700–800 USD).

– If the traffic police stop you directly, there is often an opportunity to negotiate, and you might pay around 5,000,000 VND (~$ 200).

– If a traffic camera captures the violation, you must go to the police station to settle it, which can be time-consuming.

2. Driving in the Wrong Lane

This includes entering the motorbike lane, bus lane, or roads restricted to cars.
It’s one of the most common violations, especially for foreigners unfamiliar with Vietnamese road signs.

Fine: 4,000,000 – 6,000,000 VND (~160–240 USD)

🛑 Tip: Many roads have minor or unclear signs, so be extra cautious, especially in big cities like Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi.

3. Speeding in Densely Populated Areas

In cities and towns, the speed limit is usually 50 or 60 km/h, depending on the road.

Unfortunately, it’s easy to speed without noticing due to unclear signage or blocked views. Here’s how the Vietnam driving fines 2025 apply to speeding:

* Exceeding speed by over 35 km/h:
→ Fine: 12,000,000 – 14,000,000 VND (~470–550 USD)

* Exceeding by 20–35 km/h:
→ Fine: 6,000,000 – 8,000,000 VND (~235–315 USD)

* Exceeding by 10–20 km/h:
→ Fine: 4,000,000 – 6,000,000 VND (~160–240 USD)

* Exceeding by under 10 km/h:
→ Fine: 800,000 – 1,000,000 VND (~30–40 USD)

When you see this signal board, you are in the densely populated areas. You should slow down at 50km/h

In addition to fines, you may receive demerit points on your driving record. While this doesn’t affect foreigners as much as it does locals, repeat violations can lead to more significant issues.

Final Advice

Some police officers may let you off with a warning, especially if you’re polite and cooperative. But don’t count on it — it’s always better to follow the rules.

If you’re driving in Vietnam:

✅ Watch for road signs
✅ Stay under the speed limit
✅ Avoid red lights, even late at night
✅ Use Google Maps or local apps for better navigation, such as Vietmap Live ( but it only works in Vietnam)
✅ Ask locals or your car rental provider if you’re unsure about any rule

Vietnam driving fines 2025 are now stricter and more expensive. A little attention can save you time, money, and trouble. Drive safely and enjoy the beauty of Vietnam on four wheels!
